Australia-Facebook face-off: Regulator dares tech-giant to block news content

Australia has proposed to force tech giants such as Facebook and Google to pay local media outlets for content, drawing strong opposition from the US companies. Facebook further made a statement this month saying, it would stop Australians from sharing local and international news on its websites in the proposal becomes a law. In response, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) Chair, Rod Sims said, ‘It would also weaken Facebook, so it’s their call,’ he added. ‘If people can’t get their news from Facebook then they’ll go elsewhere to get their news.’
